NEW DELHI: Lalu Prasad may have failed to get the majority for his party in Bihar but he has been assured of a 'huge margin of victory' in Pakistan.
At a reception the RJD boss and railway minister hosted in honour of the leader of Pakistani Muslim League (PML), Shujaat Hussain, in Delhi on Friday, Lalu was told by the visiting delegation about his popularity in Pakistan and that he could win an election hands down in the neighbouring country.
<span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%">Pakistan mein apke bahut vote hain </span>(You have a huge vote bank in Pakistan)," said a woman leader of the Pakistani National Assembly. "<span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%">Pakistan mein aap kahin se bhi election jeet jayenge</span> (You can easily win an election from anywhere in Pakistan)," she added.
The luncheon at a five-star hotel here was attended by a large number of parliamentarians and leaders likeHarkishen Surjeet, Sitaram Yechuri and former Prime Minister I K Gujral.
But it was Lalu all over - from receiving the guests in the lounge to entertaining them at lunch - the railway minister dwarfed everybody, including his guests from Pakistan.
"Lalu ji aapke muqable ka koi leader Pakistan mein nahi hai (There is no leader of your calibre in Pakistan)," said another member of the delegation. They reminded him of his trip to Pakistan a few years ago.
Lalu, who was in Patna, returned to Delhi on Thursday night after Shujaat Hussain expressed his desire to meet the railway minister. At lunch, Shujaat said: "Lalu had won people's heart when in Pakistan. His philosophy is close to that of Muslim League which too fights against atrocities and for the cause of the downtrodden."
Lalu took the opportunity to say that it was the right time for a dialogue to take place. <span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%">" Hum nafrat ki diwar girana chahte hain </span>(We want to break the wall of hatred)," he added.
On the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus, Lalu, handing over a replica of a train engine to Shujaat Hussain, quipped: " <span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%">Aap bus ki baat karte hain , hum to rail le jana chahte hain </span>(You are talking about the bus, we want to take a train to Pakistan)."
