LAHORE: The auction for licences of 3rd Generation (3G) mobile phone services is planned through an open biding process and only three celIular service providers would be awarded these.

Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Major General Retd Shahzada Alam Malik has said that the process of awarding the licences would be completed by the end of this year.

He was talking to reporters at the signing ceremony of Omantel SAOG and Worldcall Telecom Limited. Ambassador of Oman to Pakistan, Mohammad Bin Said Bin Mohamed Al-Lawati was also present.

After launching of 3G services, the mobile users will be able to use Internet with high speed, make video calls and other value-added data services which is dream in Pakistan. He said that deliberations for issuing the 3G licences were almost complete.

Later, Worldcall’s CEO Salman Taseer said that it was great pleasure that Omantel SAOG and Worldcall Telecom Limited announce acquisition by Omantel of a majority stake in Worldcall Telecom Limited. Omantel is acquiring 488.8 million (65 per cent of available) shares of Worldcall. Of this, 451.2 million shares are from sponsors while 37.5 million are being purchased from the public through the securities markets. The total value of this landmark transaction is around $200 million.

He said that Worldcall was positioned in a unique way being the only true Multi Service Operator (MSO) in Pakistan telecom landscape with proven track record and established market position in various segments of its operations.

Through this acquisition, Omantel has acquired direct access to a market of 170 million with immense potential for growth in core telecom and broadband services, he remarked.

He further informed that Worldcall had licenses to operate LDI, WLL and other telecom services across Pakistan as well as rights to a nationwide long haul network. Its WLL services cover 46 cities while its distribution network, which is one of the largest, reaches 59,000 outlets in 220 cities and towns, Taseer added.

Omantel’s CEO Dr. Mohammed bin Ali Al Wohaibi said that Omantel plans to escalate existing Worldcall operations to excel in telecom offerings with further enhancement of network reach and delivery capacity targeting a rapid growth in market share. Focus of rollout will principally target broadband segment with sustained growth of voice centric services. This planned expansion coupled with initial investment would see a sizable inflow of capital into Pakistan, he added. He said the new board members for Worldcall had now been nominated.

Omantel is a publicly traded telecom company, majority owned by the government, based in Oman with diversified operations. Acquisition of majority stake in Worldcall is its first overseas venture.

sir thats 3.5G NOT 3G

there is no such tenolcgy 3.5.

If you have non3g network like GSM900/1800 with GPRS then its called 2g and if they upgrade software with EDGE then it become 2.5 but it called 2g, same game for 3g or 3.5g. 3g network starts as UMTS then they have some upgraded which start as HSDPA with 14.2 mbps and HSPA+ which allow up to 42mbps speed. HSPA is last upgrade to 3g before 4g technology.

In short word...if you got 3g licence then you don't need any more permission or license to upgrade to HSPA+, all you do is spend money for towers and software upgrades.

3G is stand for third genertaion and whats 3.5G third and half generation :lol

UMTS,HSPA,HSDPA,HSUPA,HSPA+,UMTS-TDD, TD-CDMA, TD-SCDMA.

All above fall under 3g and once you have 3g licence you can go for any of above and its not necessary to have only UMTS for 384 or HSPA+ for upto 42 and all called 3g not 3 and adhi technology. :rofl

all handset having 3g technology work on all 3.5 or hspda network and you don't need hspda for handset because at the moment no handset have enogh power to use 7.2 mbps or other words no one make such model and even you connect that phone to laptop then you won't get more then 384kbps speed and you need usb modem to get more speed on laptop.

This thread was about license of 3g and at the moment no one can use 3g service in Pakistan until they buy licence and once they have that then they can go for hspda technology on very first day and never. so its use less to say 3.5g is new technology or different. you don't need any equipment for hspa or other stuff if you have 3g, all you need software to run on system.

ab bato mein konsi 3.5g ki baat kar rahey ho:lol..ik assy technology joh kisi neh ijaad hi nain ki...there is 2g,3g and then 4g

When 3 network started in UK back in 2003 then they started with only UMTS because that was the advance version of 3g at that time and now in 2008 if some will start new 3g network then he will start with current latest technology and only dumb will start with UMTS. same gose for mobile maker companies but if you buy N95 right now then it will work on network which only got UMTS and if you buy old phone models which was released in 2003 then that will work on hspda network.

In short word these technologies don't make any sense for 3g phones as far is its 3g phone.
in simple words its like software released for XP then it will work on Home or PRO or SP1,2 etc same gose for 3g.

I can only say about Internet usage in Canada through mobile phone and it is just too expensive.
I tried it once and had to go back to my previous plan.
